Jonathan Gonzalez scored twice as Leones Negros defeated Cruz Azul 2-0, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Guadalajara side were relegated on Saturday.

Cruz Azul, on the other hand, needed only a point to qualify to the Liguilla, but with the defeat, Luis Ferando Tena’s men will miss out on the Liguilla for a third season in a row.

The 2-2 draw between Puebla and Santos Laguna meant that Leones Negros were relegated despite their victory.

Alfonso Sosa’s side survived only one year in the top-tier of Mexican futbol before their eventual relegation.

The team that will take Leones Negros’ place in the Liga MX will be determined in a two-legged playoff between Necaxa and Dorados, who won the 2015 Clausura Ascenso MX title on Saturday.

Leones Negros will need to win next week against Cruz Azul to have any chance of clinching their Liga MX survival as the University of Guadalajara side lost 2-1 against Veracruz at the Estadio Jalisco on Sunday.

Alfonso Sosa’s team came into this game needing four points from their two remaining games to secure their permanence in the top-tier of Mexican soccer, and now the defeat leaves the team on the border of relegation with one week remaining in the season. Leones Negros now need a victory and a Puebla defeat to assure survival.

On the other hand, with the result, Veracruz climbed to the top of the table and wrapped up their qualification to the Liguilla.

Fidel Martinez scored his 6th goal of the season as Leones Negros and Pachuca drew 1-1 in an exciting game at the Estadio Jalisco on Sunday.

Mexico youth international, Erick Gutierrez, had put the visitors in front after 19 minutes.

However, Fidel Martinez powered a header past Oscar Perez midway through the second-half to give the home side a deserved equalizer.

At the final whistle, the point did little to either side. Leones Negros still need five more points to earn survival from relegation.

On the other hand, Pachuca missed the opportunity to climb up the table to a Liguilla position.
