Necaxa moved within a point of clinching a place in the Liguilla in their first season back in Mexico’s top-tier as the Rayos brushed aside Puebla 3-1 on Saturday.
Jesus Isijara, whose contributions this season for Necaxa have been huge, opened the scoring when he poked home in the 31st minute.
An easy victory looked on the cards after a penalty was called for an Edgar Duenas tackle inside the box. Edson Puch stepped up, but Cristian Campestrini saved to keep Puebla in the game.
In the second half, against the run of play, Puebla grabbed an equalizer through Jeronimo Amione when he took advantage of some bad timing from goalkeeper Marcelo Barovero.
But Necaxa’s reply was almost immediate and Marcos Gonzalez headed home from a Jairo Gonzalez corner to regive Necaxa the lead.
Puebla tried desperately for a leveler, but in the closing stages of the game, Robert Herrera was sent off for a handball inside the box. This time, Edson Puch made no mistake from the penalty spot to seal all three points for Necaxa.
Next, needing just a point to make the Liguilla, Necaxa close out the regular season against Chivas, while Puebla, who are essentially eliminated, will host Pumas UNAM.
