The Mexico Under-20 national team were eliminated from the FIFA U-20 World Cup after being defeated 2-0 by Serbia on Saturday afternoon.
Mexico came into this game with a chance to finish with a place in the Round of 16 with a win and even a draw, but Mexico succumbed to a composed performance from the Eastern Europeans in the first-half and crashed out of the tournament in disappointing fashion.
Serbia quickly got on the scoreboard after only a minute. Nemanja Maksimovic put Serbia ahead after a quick throw-in caught the Mexican defense napping, and the Serbian midfielder was there to head home past Gonzalez.
Andrija Zivkovic secured Serbia the lead heading into halftime, scoring a brilliant free-kick in the 42nd minute to put Mexico on the ropes.
The European side then proceeded to defend their advantage and did it superbly. Despite opportunities from Erick Gutierrez and Luis Marquez, Serbia made a determined finished to the game and secured all three points to qualify to the next round.
With the result, Mexico finished last in their group with three point in three matches. Their output equaled their worst performance at a U-20 World Cup since 2003.
