Yasser Corona’s late header cemented a 2-1 advantage for Queretaro over Veracruz in the first leg of their quarterfinal clash at the Estadio Corregidora.
Veracruz, who were one of the relegation favorites at the start of the season, started their Liguilla campaign brightly when they took the lead at the half-hour mark through Juan Albin.
However, the home-side provided the perfect response, and William da Silva equalized eight minutes later with a brilliant right-footed shot from distance.
After the break, Victor Manuel Vucetich’s men came out as the more positive side, with Ronaldinho at the center of Queretaro’s attacks.
In the closing stages, Sinha saw a long-distance effort turned away by the crossbar, but Yasser Corona was there to pickup the rebound and send his team through to the second-leg with a 2-1 advantage.
Both sides will meet again on Sunday at the Estadio Luis de la Fuente of Veracruz.
