Puebla avoided the drop as a 2-2 with Santos Laguna was enough to see them retain their Liga MX status and send Universidad de Guadalajara down to Ascenso MX.
On the other hand, Santos Laguna failed to ensure a place in Liguilla and now their fate is out of their own hands heading into the last two games of the weekend.
Santos Laguna took the lead on the half hour point when Carlos Izquierdoz directed his header for Javier Orozco to head home.
Puebla equalized right before half time as Alfonso Tamay converted from close range to spoil Leones Negros’ celebrations.
In the second half, Puebla then took the lead in the 51st minute as a powerful header from defender Luis Robles put his team in pole position to beat the drop.
Eventually, after persistent pressing from Santos Laguna, they found a way through Puebla’s defense on 73 minutes when Andres Renteria rounded Rodolfo Cota and found the back of the net.
At the final whistle, Puebla managed to hold on and avoid defeat, which would have sealed their relegation.
Meanwhile, Santos Laguna’s Liguilla fate now is the hands of Tigres, who will need to defeat Toluca tomorrow to confirm Santos’ place in the top eight.
