Mexico got their U-20 World Cup campaign off to the worst start possible as they fell 2-0 to Mali at the Otago Stadium in Dunedin.

The young El Tri side endured a blistering start to the game, but fell off gradually as the game went on.

When the game turned more physical, Hamidou Maiga picked up a red card for the African side before Diego Gama and Oscar Bernal left Mexico with 9 men.

In the 77th minute, Adama Traore headed home from a free-kick to put Mali in front.

Two minutes later, Dieudonne sealed the game after a nice one-two with Alassane Diallo.

Mexico will play their second game of the tournament against Uruguay on Wednesday.
