Jonathan Gonzalez scored twice as Leones Negros defeated Cruz Azul 2-0, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Guadalajara side were relegated on Saturday.

Cruz Azul, on the other hand, needed only a point to qualify to the Liguilla, but with the defeat, Luis Ferando Tena’s men will miss out on the Liguilla for a third season in a row.

The 2-2 draw between Puebla and Santos Laguna meant that Leones Negros were relegated despite their victory.

Alfonso Sosa’s side survived only one year in the top-tier of Mexican futbol before their eventual relegation.

The team that will take Leones Negros’ place in the Liga MX will be determined in a two-legged playoff between Necaxa and Dorados, who won the 2015 Clausura Ascenso MX title on Saturday.
