Tigres wrapped up their participation in the group stage of the Copa Libertadores with a thrilling 5-4 victory against Juan Aurich on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Atlas overcame Atletico Mineiro 1-0 at the Estadio Jalico to continue with hope of reaching the round of 16 of the tournament.
Tigres, playing largely with a reserve side, had already earned the top-spot of their group, and a place in the round of 16. The match, however, received extra attention from River Plate fans as their team’s progress was largely dependent on Tiges’ result.
Enrique Esqueda scored a hat-trick, and Mexico youth international, Jonathan Espericueta, shined in the second-half as Tigres and Juan Aurich exchanged goals to a 5-4 victory for the Mexicans.
On the other hand, Atlas needed a victory against 2013 Copa Libertadores champions, Atletico Mineiro, to keep their hopes of reaching the round of 16 alive.
Arturo Gonzalez was in charge of scoring the only goal of the match in the 40th minute to give the hosts the much needed win, but despite the result, the Rojinegros need a combination of scores to go their way on the final round of group stage play to qualify.
Atlas’ deciding match will be against Independiente Santa Fe next Wednesday.
