Santos Laguna climbed into the top-half of the table as they held on to a 1-0 win over relegation candidates Leones Negros.

UDG have failed to record a victory in their last five league games but still hold a small margin over Puebla, last in the relegation table.

Meanwhile, Santos have lost only once in a span of five games and continue with hopes of landing a Liguilla spot.

Andres Renteria, who has been involved in every single Santos goal at home, gave the hosts the lead after 37 minutes. Renteria punished Leones Negros with a diving header following a nice Jose Abella cross.

After an uninspiring end to the first-half, Fidel Martinez nearly offered his team an equalizer when he burst into the box before hitting the side netting.

Juan Luis Anangono proved trouble for the Santos defense for the majority of the game but failed to get on the scoreline.

First, Fidel Martinez gathered a bad clearance inside the box and headed into the center of the box. Anangono was there, but his eventual header went inches wide of the goal.

In the 82nd minute, Anangono had one more chance to secure a late point. Jonathan Gonzalez sent a teasing cross into the box. However, an unmarked Anangono could only get his header above the crossbar.

At the final whistle, Santos’ defense held on to send the Guerreros a step closer into the Liguilla.
