Chivas inched closer to the Liguilla after battling to a 1-1 draw with Club America on Sunday in the 218th edition of the Super Clasico.

The Rebaño Sagrado had the majority of the possession in the game but failed to find a winner past a solid performance from America’s defense.

A margin of only one point separates league-leaders, Chivas, with their closest rivals but will have the opportunity to seal their place in the Liguilla with a win next week.

Club America, on the other hand, climbed into 7th in the table ahead of their second-leg clash against Montreal Impact in the CONCACAF Champions League final.

It was an edgy to start to the game for both clubs, with each team receiving a quick yellow for reckless challenges.

But the game quickly came into life when Paul Aguilar snatched Las Aguilas the lead with a super long-distance shot. The Mexico international took his time and set off an impressive shot into the top corner of Luis Michel’s net.

In the 25th minute, Raul Lopez carved opened the America defense and sent in a cross for the perfectly positioned Omar Bravo, who forced a one-handed save from Moises Muñoz.

The hosts kept piling the pressure, and a Marco Fabian bicycle kick almost sent the crowd into a frenzy but the shot went well wide.

Gustavo Matosas opted for a more defensive stance in the second-half as Chivas settled into their tempo and dominated possession.

In the 59th minute, Raul Lopez sent a warning shot when he found himself space and sent his effort flying just above the crossbar.

Three minutes later, second-half substitute, Aldo De Nigris, found the equalizer.

A small touch from Raul Lopez outside the penalty area turned into a fortunate through-ball for De Nigris. The former Rayados man pulled a brief dummy before firing past Muñoz to put things at 1-1.

After the goal, the pace of the match slowed down considerably as both teams were unwilling to risk too much in the closing stages.

At the final whistle, both teams failed to connect on their late efforts and settled for the draw.
