Cruz Azul recorded their first win in five Liga MX games as they come from a goal down to defeat league leaders Xolos de Tijuana at the Estadio Azul on Saturday.

After going a goal behind to Alfredo Moreno’s 3rd minute opener, Cruz Azul leveled through Roque Santa Cruz, who scored his first goal since arriving to the Liga MX.

The Cementeros struck again in the second-half when Christian “Chaco” Gimenez headed the hosts to victory.

The result ended Tijuana’s nine game run without a defeat and reduced their gap at the top of the table to only one point.

On the other hand, Cruz Azul moved to third in the Liga MX table.

The Match:

Xolos swiftly took the lead after only three minutes. Alfredo “Chango” Moreno punished some bad Cruz Azul defending from a set-piece to claim the first goal of the afternoon.

Four minutes later, Moreno almost had another when Jesus Corona held on to a close range shot from the Argentine.

Soon after, however, Cruz Azul came close after Roque Santa Cruz struck a brilliant header into the woodwork from a Joao Rojas cross.

In the 41st minute, Roque Santa Cruz would not be denied a second time. Following a failed clearance, Alemão had a shot denied by Cirilo Saucedo, but the rebound sat nicely for Santa Cruz to fire into the empty net.

Cruz Azul looked more comfortable in the second-half, and Christian “Chaco” Gimenez forced Cirilo Saucedo to a great save after 57 minutes.

The hosts looked to keep up the momentum, and in the 62nd minute, Cruz Azul found their second. Rogelio Chavez launched a lobbed cross to Gimenez, who headed past Saucedo to send Cruz Azul ahead.

But the visitors were given a chance to get a grip back on the game when Joao Rojas was sent off for a second yellow.

Just before the 70th minute mark, Dayro Moreno combined with Juan Arango at the edge of the box. The former Gladbach-man unleashed a powerful shot that forced an excellent save from Jesus Corona.

The equalizer would not come, and at the end of the match, Xolos succumbed to their first defeat since week one of the competition.
