Arturo “Poncho” Gonzalez’s 86th minute goal gave Atlas a narrow 1-0 victory over Santos Laguna at the Territorio Santos Modelo on Friday night.
The Rojinegros had fallen to Independiente Santa Fe on Tuesday in the Copa Libertadores, but Gonzalez’s goal was enough to stop Tomas Boy’s men from making it three consecutive games without a victory.
The first half saw both teams fail to find a way through, but Santos started the second half strongly, with Nestor Calderon’s strike from just outside the area forcing Federico Vilar to a great save.
Eight minutes later, Djaniny put Andres Renteria through with an excellent flick, but the Colombian missed the target from close range.
Five minutes from time, an Atlas free kick fumbled towards Enrique Perez. The defender unleashed shot from a narrow angle to hit the post.
A minute later, Santos’ hopes of getting anything from the game were extinguished when Arturo Gonzalez poked the ball into the net for a late winner.
The victory makes Atlas’ trip to Brazil next week more comfortable as the Rojinegros resume activity in the Copa Libertadores against Atletico Mineiro on Wednesday.
