Club America suffered a shock-defeat as Luis Telles’ first-half strike helped Leones Negros defeat the current Liga MX champions 1-0 at the Estadio Azteca on Saturday.
Twenty-two-year old Telles scored the only goal after 32 minutes to instill some hope in U.D.G.’s fight to stay in the top flight of Mexican soccer.
Meanwhile, Las Aguilas produced a sluggish display which places them five points behind league leaders Xolos de Tijuana.
America went into Saturdays game with 14 points in the table, and with star signing, Carlos Darwin Quintero, back from suspension.
And it was America who made a brisk start to the game with a Dario Benedetto header forcing Humberto Hernandez to a save after only two minutes.
In the 15th minute, America’s defense allowed Fidel Martinez to dribble past three opponents and into the area before being tripped inside the box. No penalty was awarded in what looked like a clear foul.
But Leones Negros’ best opportunity came in the 32nd minute when Luis Telles smashed a left-footed shot into the back of the net to give the visitors the surprising lead.
In the second half, America continued to dominate possession after Quintero dribbled past two and fired a shot over the crossbar.
In truth, Las Aguilas produced few clear chances, and their desperation was perfectly illustrated in the 85th minute after Pablo Aguilar saw a straight red for a rash tackle.
It was an afternoon to forget for the champions, and in injury-time, Jose Guerrero got America’s second red to leave the hosts with 9 men.
At the final whistle, Leones Negros provided what could be the most surprising result in the 2015 Clausura and move away from the bottom of the Liga MX table with seven points.
