Julio Furch scored twice and grabbed an assist to give Veracruz a 3-0 victory over Atlas at the Estadio Jalisco on Saturday night.
Tomas Boy made seven changes to the team that lost to Santos Laguna last week, with the Rojinegros resting players ahead of their Copa Libertadores game against Colo-Colo.
Meanwhile, Veracruz earned their fourth victory of the season and remain as the only undefeated team left in the Liga MX after eight weeks.
It was Veracruz who looked most threatening in the first 45 minutes, but Veracruz’s first-half success didn’t show until the 40th minute.
Julio Furch tipped a long-ball with his head to Daniel Villalva. The former River Plate man was allowed to drift into the box and dribble past the goalkeeper before placing his shot in the top corner of the net to give the visitors the lead.
In the second half, Atlas finally settled, with Aldo Leao Ramirez forcing Edgar Hernandez to a great one-handed save.
But Veracruz doubled their lead 15 minutes later. The ball fell nicely for Julio Furch from a Fernando Meneses pass. The Argentine received with his right before turning and unleashing a left-footed strike past Miguel Fraga to put things at 2-0.
Atlas never recovered, and two minutes from time, Meneses sent his cross to the far post where Furch raced past his defender to head in his second.
With the result, Veracruz remain three points away from league leaders, Xolos de Tijuana, while Furch’s brace places him at the very top of the scorer’s table in the Liga MX with six goals
