Juan Arango scored a brilliant free kick in the 21st minute as Tijuana continued their great run of form with a 3-0 win over Pumas UNAM.
Just a point separates the league leaders, Cruz Azul, from second-place Tijuana.
On the other hand, Pumas remain without a win at the Estadio Caliente since Xolos’ introduction to the top flight of Mexican soccer.
The hosts got off to a bad start, and Dario Veron almost scored the opener inside four minutes. The Paraguayan struck a powerful shot through the crowded box but failed to hit the mark by inches.
Ismael Sosa troubled Xolos throughout the first half, and in the 16th minute, Sosa received the ball inside the box and fired a shot that forced Cirilo Saucedo to a diving save.
But two minutes later, against the run of play, Gabriel Hauche paced by the left-hand side and enabled Alfredo Moreno. “El Chango”, who was replacing injured Dayro Moreno in the starting lineup, finished past Alfredo Saldivar to give the hosts the lead.
Tijuana got a quick second after Juan Arango scored a spectacular free kick. The Venezuelan put his kick to the top corner of Saldivar’s goal as the ball settled into the back of the net.
Xolos looked every bit like a team that haven’t lost since week one, and in the second half, they continued to threaten for a third with shots from Ruiz and Hauche coming close to hitting the target.
In the 77th minute, Veron pushed a Tijuana attacker inside the box. Referee Cesar Arturo Ramos didn’t hesitate and pointed to the spot.
Arango showed composure and stroked in the penalty for his second of the night.
At the end of the game, it was a deserved win for the home team. Their next game is against relegation favorites, Leones Negros.
Meanwhile, Pumas will face Club America in the Clasico Capitalino.
