Two goals from Edgar Benitez saw Toluca record a 3-1 victory over Leones Negros at the Estadio Nemesio Diez on Saturday afternoon.
Toluca move to fourth in the table, with seven points in four matches. Leones Negros, meanwhile, move to last in the relegation table.
UDG were bossing possession and threatening on goal in the early minutes. First, Luis Fernando Tellez sent a long distance shot that Alfredo Talavera held on to comfortably.
Four minutes later, Talavera was fortunate that Oscar Rojas was standing on his goal-line when Rojas produced a goal-line clearance to prevent Felix Araujo from scoring a powerful header.
But Toluca showed good response, and twenty minutes later, Edgar Benitez capitalized on a low-driving cross from Carlos Esquivel to put Toluca ahead.
The Diablos Rojos got a second in the 36th minute when Carlos Gerardo Rodriguez volleyed in from an excellent Paulo da Silva pass. The Paraguayan defender produced an amazing back-heel flick to put Rodriguez through.
Leones Negros were struggling to create chances, but early in the second half, Andres Rios hit the woodwork from an excellent left-footed strike.
In the 85th minute, UDG opened their scoring when Fidel Martinez drilled a free-kick to the top-right corner of Talavera’s goal.
However, Benitez put the game beyond doubt in the 88th minute with a left-footed finish after a great one-two.
The defeat leaves Leones Negros rooted to the bottom of the relegation table with 13 games to go in the season.
