Santos Laguna claimed a 1-0 victory over Chivas on Friday night at the Estadio Corona. Caixinha’s men made it three victories in a row behind a second-half Djaniny goal.
It was the hosts who had the first big chance after eight minutes when Andres Renteria unleashed a curling effort that went inches wide of the far post.
With 10 minutes to go in the first half, Renteria was denied a second time when his shot was palmed away by Luis Michel.
In the 64th minute, Djaniny found himself through at the edge of the box. The Cape Verdean skipped past three defenders to slot in a brilliant effort across Michel and into the net.
After a second glance, the forward was in a clear offsides position when he received the ball, but it mattered little as Santos Laguna took the lead.
At the other end, David Toledo found himself with space inside the box after a Raul Lopez free-kick, but his half-volley forced an excellent save from Agustin Marchesin.
The refereeing had been a hot topic in recent days, and after Chivas forward, Carlos Fierro, was suspended during the week for diving, the match officials were always going to be under constant scrutiny for this game.
In the 89th minute, Erick “Cubo” Torres took a fall inside the box, but no penalty was called in a play that will most certainly be talked about during the week.
In injury time, Toledo sent Chivas’ last chance over the crossbar as Santos held on to give their fans all three points at home.
