Dario Benedetto’s second-half goal helped Club America conquer Pumas UNAM 1-0 in the Clasico Capitalino on Sunday afternoon.
Las Aguilas registered their fourth win of the season when Dario Benedetto put them up 1-0 after Pumas failed continuously to break the deadlock.
With the result, Gustavo Matosas’ side move to second in the table and clinched their fifth straight game without a defeat.
Pumas, on the other hand, lost their third consecutive game in this Clausura and remain in the bottom half of the table.
The hosts had plenty of the possession in the opening period and came close to opening the scoreline with just four minutes on the clock. Gerardo Alcoba appeared poorly marked inside the box to head centimeters wide of the far post from a David Cabrera free-kick.
In the 20th minute, Eduardo Herrera saw his close-range strike blocked by America goalkeeper, Moises Muñoz, after a precise midfield pass from Jose Van Rankin.
Paul Aguilar, however, almost did damage for the visitors when he struck a header into the near post from a Rubens Sambueza corner.
At the start of the second half, Muñoz had another potentially game-changing save after Ismael Sosa’s tipped shot came close to opening the score.
Shortly after, Muñoz’s quick reaction denied David Cabrera a free-kick at the edge of the box.
The former Morelia goalkeeper had an exceptional game for the champions, saving the Americanistas in more than one occasion.
In the 52nd minute, against the run of play, Osvaldo Martinez allowed Rubens Sambueza to start a breakaway. The Argentine drove forward before striking the ball at goal. Alfredo Saldivar managed to get a hand, but the rebound fell to Dario Benedetto, who picked his shot into the back of the net.
As the game wound down, Matosas’s men found spaces behind Pumas’ fullbacks, and Benedetto came close to getting his second. Rubens Sambueza unleashed a shot-cross from the right-wing, but Benedetto couldn’t get a foot on it.
Pumas, as in so many recent games, failed to make the best of their chances, and at the final whistle, Club America deservedly earned all three points against their hated cross-town rivals.
