Marco Fabian’s  free-kick goal completed Chivas’ turnaround as the  Rebaño Sagrado bolstered their chances of finishing outside of last place in the relegation table with a 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul at the Estadio Azul on Saturday afternoon.

A victory for Chivas looked unlikely when Gerardo Flores put Cruz Azul into the lead in the 32nd minute.

But ten minuets from time, Aldo De Nigris equalized, and Marco Fabian’s 82nd free kick gave Chivas only their third victory of the season.

Meanwhile, with the defeat, the Cementeros’ undefeated season came to a close.

The Match:

Chivas were enjoying the majority of the possession, but nearly went down on the scoreline after 19 minutes.

Christian “Chaco” Gimenez set up Mauro Formica on the left. Formica sent the ball into the center and Alemão lost his marker, Jair Pereira, to back-heel the ball only inches wide of the far post.

In the 32nd minute, Cruz Azul seized the lead when Formica set up Gerardo Flores to a powerful finish across Chivas goalkeeper, Luis Michel. It was a fine finish to a play that started with a Baez back-heel.

Chivas’ reply, however, almost produced an equalizer when Raul Lopez fired a free-kick from distance that forced Jesus Corona to a great save.

Three minutes after the break, Chivas came close again when Corona came out wrongly for a bad cross that left Giovani Hernandez alone in front of the empty net. Gerardo Flores played hero and swept Hernandez’s shot off the line.

Five minuets later, Baez added to Cruz Azul’s efforts when he lifted the ball over the top of Chivas’ defense but the crossbar denied Cruz Azul of their second.

Jose Manuel de la Torre’s response was to put on Carlos Fierro and Aldo De Nigris, and in the 79th minute, both combined for Chivas equalizer. De Nigris timed his header superbly from a Fierro cross to level the score.

Three minuets later, Cruz Azul’s evening came crashing down. Marco Fabian stepped up and placed a marvelous free kick pass Jesus Corona to give Chivas the emphatic lead.

Chivas were clinging on and in the 85th minute, Rafael Baca nearly replied immedately for the hosts after his shot went agonizingly close to the post.

The last ten minutes were extremely enjoyable with both teams producing end to end play.

But in the closing seconds, Cruz Azul ran out of ideas as the visitors escaped with the unlikely three points.
