Christian “Chaco” Gimenez’s goal gave Cruz Azul a 1-0 victory over Monterrey at the Estadio Azul on Saturday afternoon.
Chaco’s rocket from an Alemão one-two was enough to see the home-side claim all three points against a disappointing Rayados side.
Cruz Azul remain undefeated and have not conceded a single goal this season.
Halfway through the first half, Chaco lifted the ball into the box. His pass was headed back to him by Alemão and Gimenez drilled the ball in at the far post to give Cruz Azul the lead.
Four minutes later, Julio Cesar Dominguez headed inches wide from a Chaco cross as Luis Fernando Tena’s men mounted the pressure on a dull Monterrey side.
But in the 33rd minute, Rayados showed signs of energy when Lucas Silva launched a left-footed strike from distance that fizzed past the woodwork.
Alemão’s arrival to Cruz Azul had long been criticized in the beginning of the season. But the Brazilian was given the freedom to roam in and outside the box by the Monterrey defense, and he didn’t disappoint. In the 39th minute, he dribbled past one defender on the left-wing before forcing a good save from Juan de Dios Ibarra.
In the second half, Joao Rojas was Cruz Azul’s most dangerous man. First, in the 56th minute, Rojas forced a goal-saving block from Ibarra on a one on one opportunity.
Twenty minutes later, Rojas was allowed time to launch a curling effort inside the box but his shot went well wide of the far post.
Despite Rojas’ missed opportunities, Cruz Azul remained on top.
At the final whistle, the Cementeros went top of the league with the win.
