Luis Arias scored once in the 77th minute as Independiente Santa Fe beat Atlas 1-0 at the Estadio Jalisco on Tuesday night.
Atlas, who lost 3-1 to Pachuca on the weekend, held possession for large periods of the game, but never really tested the Colombian-side’s defense.
Santa Fe, meanwhile, set the tone of the game by playing on the defensive and pushing men forward at the right time.
The first real chance of the game didn’t arrive until the 38th minute. Atlas goalkeeper, Federico Vilar, picked out Keno on a breakaway, who played a quick service from the right. Rodrigo Millar ran onto the cross to volley only inches wide of the post.
Santa Fe, however, continued to defend, while offering a threat on the counter, and the Colombians made their patience count in the 77th minute.
Atlas’ defense gifted Santa Fe the ball when a badly controlled pass put Luis Arias in on goal. Arias slotted past Vilar and into the net to put the visitors ahead.
The Rojinegros, who remain without a victory this year at the Estadio Jalisco, never looked like getting back into the game.
At the final whistle, boos rang from the stands from the Atlas faithful as the hosts dropped their first three points of the competition.
Atlas’ next game in the Libertadores is next Wednesday against Copa do Brasil titleholders, Atletico Mineiro.
