Christian Suarez scored the only goal as Atlas claimed an emphatic 1-0 win over Atletico Mineiro at the Estadio Independencia on Wednesday night.
The Ecuadorian’s second-half strike was enough to secure the Rojinegros’ first win in this year’s Copa Libertadores.
With the result, Atletico Mineiro suffered their first home defeat in the Copa Libertadores since 1978.
It took Atlas five minutes to construct their first attacking move when Rodrigo Millar speared the ball over from an inviting position inside the box.
At the other end, Federico Vilar nearly gifted the hosts the lead after 19 minutes. Luan picked up a misplaced pass from the Atlas goalkeeper and curled an angled shot just wide.
Atletico Mineiro were on the front foot, and a scramble after a free-kick resulted in a Brazilian chance missed from close range.
Atlas’ attacking threat was largely restricted to counters, and in the 69th minute, Juan Carlos Medina almost put Atlas in front after he chested down a ball and volleyed into the crossbar.
But Atlas pressed for a winner, and in the 86th minute, they would get it. Medina nipped a through-ball ahead of the Galo defense. Christian Suarez received the ball on the break and slotted it into the near corner to give Atlas the win.
