Leiton Jimenez scored a brace to give Veracruz their first three points of 2015 with a 2-1 victory over Santos Laguna in the Liga MX’s season opener.
It was the home team, Santos Laguna, who took an early lead with a goal in the 3rd minute from Diego Gonzalez. It was the Argentine’s first game for Santos, having arrived from Lanus along with goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin for the 2015 Clausura, and it would be the first goal in the young 2015 season.
It looked like a comfortable game for the Laguneros, and they headed into the half with the lead.
In the second half, Veracruz grew into the game. Center-back Leiton Jimenez made Santos pay for terrible defending on a set-piece to put the Tiburones Rojos even.
Ten minutes later, Daniel Villalba almost put the visitors in front. After a clever one-two with Michel Vasquez, Villalba forced Marchesin to a phenomenal save.
It was, however, Leiton Jimenez’s day. This time around, the defender took advantage of poor defending from a corner to head his team into the lead in the 74th minute.
Despite Santos’ late attempts, Veracruz earned the first big surprise of 2015 in Mexico. With Veracruz manager, Carlos Reinoso, raising his arms in the air at the final whistle, Veracruz celebrate a small advantage in the 2015 relegation battle.
