Mexico’s U20 team climbed to the very top of Group B in the CONCACAF U20 Championship with a 2-0 victory over Canada.
Pachuca youngster Hirving Lozano and Diego Pineda were the goalscorers for the young El Tri side.
It was Lozano who would deliver the first real chance for Mexico in the game, but his corner-cross traveled dangerously across goal with no subsequent finish.
Lozano worked the Canada defense all game, and midway through the first half, his two efforts on goal proved to go just wide of the goal.
In the 30th minute, Lozano achieved a beautiful reception just outside the box, dribbled past an opponent, and finished to the lower corner to put Mexico ahead.
It took Canada a while to get going, but Jordan Hamilton almost equalized for Canada on two occasions with a curling effort and a header, right before the half.
In the second half, Michael Petrasso came closest to equalizing for Canada when he found himself on a 3 on 3 breakaway but his effort went just inches wide.
In injury time, 17-year-old Erick Aguirre burst forward from the right-hand side and laid the ball to Diego Pineda. Pineda pushed the ball into the empty net to guarantee Mexico all three points.
Mexico will now face Honduras on Thursday.
