Leones Negros responded to victories from Puebla and Veracruz with a win of their own against Monterrey to sink Chivas into last place of the relegation table. Fidel Martinez scored the only goal as the hosts took their first three points of 2015.
The Guadalajara-side almost scored immediately from the start when Stefan Medina gifted Andres Rios a one on one with the goalkeeper, but the Argentine made a fluke out of it and gave the ball straight to the goalkeeper.
Despite having ball possession in the first 20 minutes, Leones Negros failed to break the deadlock, and Monterrey almost made them pay. Pablo Barrera rushed through the right-wing but his shot went just wide.
A minute later, a mix up at the back resulted in a curling effort from Dorlan Pabon that grazed the side of the net.
At the start of the second half, Monterrey looked vulnerable every time Leones Negros went forward. Rios dribbled into the box with ease and his shot forced Orozco to another good save.
UDG always looked more likely to score, and in the 68th minute, Jahir Barraza sent a gorgeous cross into the box that Fidel Martinez headed in to put Leones Negros ahead.
In spite of Monterrey’s best efforts, Leones Negros never looked like conceding.
The final whistle was received with joy from the home fans as Leones Negros earn a huge three points in their quest for salvation.
