The Japanese National Team, led by Mexican Javier Aguirre, was eliminated from the AFC Asian Cup in penalties on Friday. The Japanese came into the tournament as the reigning champions, but the United Arab Emirates pulled the upset as they defeated Aguirre’s side in their quarter-final affair.

In the opening minutes, Ali Mabkhout put the UAE in front with a stunning volley.

But substitute, Gaku Shibasaki, equalized for Japan, nine minutes from time.

With the scores even, the match headed to penalties. Honda and Kagawa missed for Japan and the UAE sneaked through to the semifinals of the AFC Asian Cup. You can watch the penalty shootout below.
