Ismael Sosa scored two goals as Pumas UNAM beat Toluca 3-2 in an entertaining game at the Estadio Universitario.
Pumas did remarkably well from the start, and in the third minute, off a David Cabrera corner, Gerardo Alcoba rose higher than anybody to direct his header into the back of the net for Pumas’ opener.
In the 11th minute, David Cabrera was unlucky not to score when his left-footed shot went just missing the mark.
But the momentum was on Pumas’ side, and eight minutes later, Sosa doubled the hosts’ lead with a stunning right-footed finish.
Moments after, Dante Lopez dribbled into the box from the left-wing to put Sosa in a position to slot home, but the Argentine made a waste of it by dragging his shot towards the goalkeeper.
Toluca showed more intent after the break, and in the 55th minute, Carlos Esquivel unleashed a volley to make things 2-1.
In the 75th minute, 18-year-old Omar Islas picked out the in-form Ismael Sosa from a one-two, and the former Universidad Catolica man slotted in home his second of the day.
With less than four minutes to play, Edgar Benitez gave his team some hope when he scored off a half-volley to make things 3-2.
In the closing seconds, the visitors almost equalized when Esquivel fizzed past his marker on the right-wing and whipped in a dangerous cross. Navas was there but his shot went only inches wide.
At the final whistle, Pumas held on and earned their three points of the season.
