Giovani Dos Santos’ goal proved to be the match-winner as Villarreal go through to the next round of the Copa del Rey with a 3-2 aggregate victory against la Real Sociedad.

The Mexican forward was involved in a number of key moments, and in the 27th minute, Gio led the attack on a breakaway. The Mexican burst forward and laid the ball to Gerard Moreno. Moreno showed no hesitance and curled in the opener for the Yellow Submarine.

Right before the half, needing three goals to advance, Carlos Vela looked to inspire the home-side when he slotted in a rebound off a corner to to put things 2-1 on aggregate.

But after grabbing an assist, Giovani Dos Santos was not finished, and in the 73rd minute, Gio took advantage of a mistake at the back and slotted in Villarreal’s second.

Villarreal seemed set for victory, but two minuets later, Esteban Granero scored a beautiful volley from a Carlos Vela pass to make things 3-2 on aggregate.

It was a valiant effort from Vela’s team, but despite their best efforts, they couldn’t find the two goals they needed in the closing stages of the game.

Villarreal will now face Getafe in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey.
