Dario Benedetto’s 20th minute goal earned Club America manager, Gustavo Matosas, a much-needed 1-0 victory over Tigres at the Estadio Azteca.
Having lost the league title to America more than a month ago, Tigres was again unable to claim victory against Las Aguilas.
America dominated for large periods of the first-half, and in the 5th minute, Oribe Peralta had the first real effort of the game. Peralta picked up a perfect through pass from Darwin Quintero inside the box, but his subsequent shot went only inches wide.
In the 20th minute, the hosts finally broke the deadlock. Darwin Quintero unleashed a cross from the right-wing, and Dario Benedetto headed the ball to the far post to put America ahead. There was a question if Benedetto meant to pass it instead, but America fans will not care as the Argentine scored his first goal of the season.
The champions carried their momentum into the second half, and only seconds in, Quintero gathered a nice back-heel pass from Benedetto, but Nahuel Guzman denied Quintero his goal.
Tigres’ response will have Ricardo Ferretti fuming in training next week as Tigres failed to create a real chance until injury time; Guerron found himself with space inside the box, but Moises Muñoz reacted to make a great save.
Club America now move within two points of league leaders, Tijuana, while Tigres remain in the bottom-half of the table.
