For the second week running, Cruz Azul earned a 1-0 victory as they defeated Santos Laguna in their first home game of the season.
Just 10 minutes into the game, Roque Santa Cruz, Cruz Azul’s star signing for the Clausura, forced the goalkeeper to a save with a lovely flick. Two minutes later, however, Cruz Azul fans were left frustrated when the Paraguayan international left the game with an injury.
Santos Laguna goalkeeper, Agustin Marchesin, was doing well to keep his team in the half. In the 23rd minute, Joao Rojas received a pass from Christian Gimenez on the left wing. He found himself with space for the strike, but Marchesin was there for the save. The rebound, however, bounced to the edge of the line as Marchesin, again, launched himself dramatically to kick the ball away before it crossed the line.
Three minutes before the break, Santos had their own chance as Abella whipped in a cross from the left wing. Calderon managed to jump over his defender but his header bounced off the woodwork.
The man who replaced Santa Cruz, Alemão, wasn’t going to be denied. Eight minutes into the second half, Joao Rojas and Rafael Baca played a one-two that left the Ecuadorian open inside the box. Rojas’ shot was blocked, but Alemão was there to tuck in the rebound for Cruz Azul’s first.
That was Alemão’s most significant contribution as the Brazilian failed to impress in his first game with the Cementeros.
Luis Fernando Tena’s men always looked more likely to score a second. In the 84th minute, Rojas burst forward from a breakaway before allowing Gimenez a clear shot at goal. “Chaco” inexplicably failed to control the ball appropriately in what looked like a chance to double the lead.
In injury time, Gimenez and Rojas combined again. This time it was Rojas who had his effort denied.
At the final whistle, Cruz Azul earned their second victory of the season and momentarily sit second in the table. For Santos, it is their second defeat in two games.
