Pachuca suffered their first home defeat of the season as the Tuzos fell 1-0 to Cruz Azul. The game was delayed by an hour due to a heavy hailstorm that covered the field with a sheet of white hail.
Roque Santa Cruz arrived to Cruz Azul as the big money signing of the season and it didn’t take him to long to make his mark. In the 9th minute, Santo Cruz flicked a cross into the middle of the box and Joao Rojas beat his defender to put the Cementeros ahead.
Joao Rojas stamped his presence in the left-wing all game, and he looked like Cruz Azul’s most dangerous player for most of the first half.
With the visitors in control, Christian “Chaco” Jimenez almost doubled the lead for Cruz Azul through a free-kick but his shot hit the woodwork.
Diego Buonanotte took charge for Pachuca, but his diagonal cross from the left, ten minutes later, went unnoticed in the far post.
Joao Rojas was running riot, and as the half approached, he forced a corner off Oscar “Conejo” Perez’s gloves from a long-distance rocket.
Midway through the second half, Rojas again produced another goal-scoring chance after combining well with Roque Santa Cruz but his shot went well wide.
Pachuca’s late push for an equalizer would prove to be wasteful.
It was a welcoming start to 2015 for Cruz Azul.
