Chivas earned an important victory in their relegation battle after edging out Pachuca 1-0 at the Estadio Omnilife on Saturday night.
A dull opening set the tone of the first half as both teams looked flat for the first 45 minutes.
The break, however, brought the game some life, and in the 52nd minute, Raul Lopez came close when he sent a free-kick into the side netting.
Ten minutes later, the hosts took the lead. Carlos Fierro was tripped inside the box, and the referee pointed for a penalty-kick. Giovani Hernandez sent Oscar Perez the wrong way to give Chivas the advantage.
At the other end, Pachuca missed the target with all their efforts. One of their only two shots on target came from substitute Junior Sornoza. Sornoza sent a strike from distance that was easily caught by Luis Michel.
Indeed, Pachuca did not come close to scoring the equalizer, and Chivas finished the game with all three points.
The win lifts Chivas ahead of Veracruz and Puebla in the relegation table. Meanwhile, it was Pachuca’s third defeat in four games.
