2015 Liga MX Apertura Draft: Winners and Losers

Check out the Winners and Losers of the 2015 Liga MX Apertura Draft.

Winners

Chivas – Oswaldo Alanis?  Edwin Hernandez? No, the real reason Chivas were one of the winners in this draft is because they got rid of a lot of their deadwood, while keeping the same players from last season. Chivas is already one of the better built teams in the league, and a lot of the guys who left the club in this draft were just never up to par or reached the potential that was expected from them in this team.

For the most part, Alanis’ arrival is intriguing. This opens the door for Carlos Salcedo potentially leaving to Europe, but in the case he doesn’t, it offers Jose Manuel de la Torre an added flexibility with his back-line.

As for Alan Pulido? It looks like he is adamant about a return to the Liga MX. It does pinpoint a lack of depth in the forward position from Chivas. But there will be another opportunity for the Rebaño Sagrado to make another big signing in the “Draft de Seleccionados” and something tells me all that freed up money in wages won’t be all going to Jorge Vergara lawyer fees.

Dorados – Without a doubt, the biggest winners of the draft were Dorados. The new member of the Liga MX spent big.  Now it is no surprise for a team that recently were promoted to spend tons of money in these type of events, but it looks like Dorados did theirs with every intent of staying in the top-flight.

They spent everywhere. They can build a starting lineup entirely from their new signings if they wanted to. And they weren’t just signings of players that are used to jumping around teams every six months, they got fairly good players. It will be interesting to see just how well this Dorados team plays once it comes down to the real business in July.

Atlas – New manager means new times are ahead for Atlas. Tomas Boy’s reign at the Rojinegros finally came to an end, and Gustavo Matosas has taken charge of the team. Atlas won’t shock the world with their new signings, but you get the feeling that most players are an upgrade of what they already have.

Losers

Toluca- After not making the Liguilla for the first time in quite a while, Toluca were fairly quiet in the transfer market. The Diablos Rojos were becoming a staple every six months in the playoffs, and they did very little for their cause by only adding Omar Arellano to their lines.

Jurgen Damm – For a guy who was rumored to be in AS Roma’s agenda, a move to Tigres has to be quite a letdown. Sure, the transfer is no fault of his own, Pachuca were the ones in charge of handling his contract and they simply sold to the highest bidder.

His acquisition shows Tigres have the financial muscle, but it remains to be seen if Damm will be just an object to sell jerseys or if he will actually improve under Ricardo Ferretti.

2015 Liga MX Draft: Winners and Losers

By Rafael

Winners

America- It should come to no surprise that Club America were one of the big winners when it comes to transfers for the Clausura 2015. They got their deals early and they got them done. The purchases of Darwin Quintero and Dario Benedetto add an impressive layer of depth to Las Aguilas’ attack. Likewise, Miguel Samudio adds an extra option at the fullback positions. In the case that Miguel Layun does make a move to Europe or if new manager  Gustavo Matosas decides to play him in the midfield, Samudio can fill in at fullback. The only sensible loss at the team was that of Jesus Molina. Molina was stellar for Club America in their championship run, but in return they got a defensive midfielder that could easily be one of the best in the Liga MX in Pellerano. Lastly, the Mexico City club got rid of some of the deadwood like Mendoza, Valenzuela, and Rey. With the combination of Gustavo Matosas arriving to the club, their bid for a a back-to-back title looks strong.
