Cruz Azul finished their Club World Cup campaign with a defeat in a penalty shootout to Auckland City in the third-place match. It was an amazing conclusion to Auckland City’s surprising run, which saw the semi-professional side play as underdogs in all their games.

Ryan De Vries opened the scoring right before halftime to put the New Zealand side up 1-0.

Not long into the second half, Joao Rojas equalized in the 57th minute after picking up his own rebound.

Both teams had their chances to win the game, but after 90 minutes, both teams headed to the penalty spot.

Once in the penalty shootout, Mauro Formica and Ismael Valadez missed their penalty shots for Cruz Azul. In contrast, Auckland City scored all of theirs to give the nation of New Zealand a historic victory at the club level.

Cruz Azul will now shift their focus to the start of the Clausura 2015 campaign.
