Gustavo Matosas has officially announced his exit as Leon manager.

It was three years in which the Uruguayan manager led Leon from the depths of Mexico’s second division to consecutive titles in the top division of Mexican soccer.

“It is the moment to end the cycle. It was three marvelous years, and I am leaving very grateful,” commented Matosas.

Leon came into the last round of regular season play with a realistic chance of entering the liguilla, but an early red card made things difficult. Tijuana went on to win that game and deprive Leon of any hope to qualify to this year’s liguilla.

Matosas caught many people’s attention with his style of play and his personality off the field. His future in the Liga MX remains uncertain for now, but many clubs are already rumored to be after his signature.
