Toluca survived a late barrage of attacks from Jaguares to become the third semifinalist of the Liga MX with a 1-1 draw. The aggregate score was 2-2, but like with America and Tigres, the draw was enough to put Toluca through due to their better positioning in the table.
It was a game of high-intensity from both teams, and it was Toluca who hit first in the 14th minute. Jeronime Amione headed down a cross in the box, and Pablo Velasquez took full advantage of it to put “El Diablo” up 1-0.
Toluca’s lead didn’t last long. 6 minutes later, Diego de la Torre would score from a free-kick to even the scoreline.
Toluca’s goalkeeper, Alfredo Talavera, could have done better, but Jaguares would still need one more goal to go through.
Toluca youngster Jordan Silva had a terrific game. He almost put Toluca in front in the 66th minute, but his shot went just wide.
It was a measured performance by Toluca and Jose Cardozo’s men. The team didn’t lose shape too early in the game, and they managed to stay tight in the last few minutes.
For Jaguares, it was a bitter end to a season in which they surpassed many people’s expectations.
Toluca now join America and Tigres in semifinals of the Liga MX.
