Club America defeated Pumas 1-0 today to seal their place in the next round of the Liga MX Liguilla.
America 1-0 Pumas
It was perhaps not what Club America fans had expected, but America was effective today. They came into the game with the simplest of scenarios being a 1-0 win to put them through, and they accomplished it.
From the start, America took the initiative and they were masters of possession early. “Pikolin” Palacios received a yellow card, and Miguel Layun sent a free-kick right at the goalkeepers gloves only seconds into the game.
America’s attacking style wouldn’t last long, and as the game progressed, America started losing more and more momentum. On the other hand, Pumas improved on their speculative play, and they finished the half as the better team.
Pumas’ defense looked near-perfect in the start of the second half, but it was Pumas on the attack that lacked solidity; several one-on-ones went to waste, first Isamel Sosa and then Eduardo Herrera.
The Auriazul side started playing a more defensive game, and America took advantage of that on a 74th minute corner. It was always going to be the kind of game where an error might cost the team the tie. Paolo Goltz would take advantage of some poor marking and head in the all-important goal.
It was Goltz’s first goal as an America player and the goal that would put America through to the next round, the 1-1 on aggregate would be enough because of America’s better positioning in the table.
It was not convincing, but America now look forward to their semifinal game next week.
